Taken For A Ride

Koffie Annan should learn from the past and take Syria’s promise to prevent arms smuggling to Lebanon with a big bucket of salt.

One more sucker?

Now that the Syrian President told the UN chief what he wanted to hear, he can safely go back to his habit of denying, in Arabic, all what he said. He will remind us how the UN is controlled by an American hegemony, how UNSCR 1701 is a Zionist plot, and how the Lebanese Democratically elected Government is an Israeli product.

Bashar El Assad can now go back to promoting unrest in Lebanon through his agents and lackeys. He can go back to his threats of cutting off the borders with Lebanon and he can go back to sucking up to Iran, his last remaining friend in this part of the world.

Mr. Annan, unless you follow up closely with Assad, or as they say in your home country Ghana: fili fili, you will be taken for a ride just like Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos before you.

Remember what the French President had to say of Syria’s credibility after the Moratinos fiasco:
"Experience has led me not to completely trust Syria. A few days ago, I noticed that the Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, met with Syrian leaders and President Bashar Assad, and Moratinos declared that Syria would use all its influence to build peace in the region. Within a half hour, Syria denied what was said about it. This is not encouraging. I repeat, I have no trust [in Syria]." Chirac added, "Syria has more than once declared its agreement on the Lebanese identity of the Shebaa Farms. But it never accepted to prove its agreement in writing, even when this is a legal demand, so that the UN could adjust the border."
